Half of the World; The City of Beauty and Art
Isfahan is the fourth largest city and the third most populous city in Iran.
Actually, the city is famous for its beautiful Islamic architecture, bridges, unique mosques.
Indeed, because of this, in local popular culture, Isfahan is half of the world.
The city joined the Creative Cities as the first cities in Iran in December 2015. Along with Rasht, and under the supervision of UNESCO.
Name of Isfahan
From ancient times, the name of the city changed many times.
One of the famous names was Yahoodieh.
It was because of, Cyrus the great moved Jewish from Babylon and settled in this place.
Army means Sepah, In Persian. So most writers believe, especially during the Sassanid era, Isfahan was the center of armies and the troops.
Due to this fact, this region named Sepahan.
Finally, after the conquest of Iran by the Muslim Arabs, Sepahan changed to Isfahan.
Because there was no letter “P” in the Arabic language, thus they changed “P” with “F”.
An Iranian historian of the tenth century writes:
“When the Jews emigrated from Jerusalem, took away some of Jerusalem’s soil and water.
They did not settle anywhere without testing soil and water.
Then Jews continued to search until reach the city of Isfahan region.
After tested the soil and water, they founded it is similar to Jerusalem.
Therefore they settled there, and began to plant the earth and born their children.
Thus today the name of this region is Judea (Yahoodieh).”
In 1627 AD, Shah Abbas transferred the Safavid capital city from Qazvin to Isfahan.
The foundation of the city as a capital gave positive results to it. And then mosques, cisterns (place for store water in summer) and caravansaries built in the city.
During the Safavid period, Isfahan became the best city in the east.
Shi’a Islam is the main religion in Iran and also in the city. and for this reason, there are a lot of amazing mosques in Isfahan.
And also, Armenians, Jews, and Zoroastrians, and other religious life in the city.
Jolfa is a region that is more Armenian and located south of the city.
Vank Cathedral and many old and beautiful churches are in this area.
